The natural colorings of concrete, steel, smooth stucco, and a few kinds of stone have a cool appearance which may be uninviting if overused. The apparent solution is to add color, but coloration can take you far from a modern aesthetic. One easy answer is to use color, but with such subtlety that it barely reads as such. The Davis colorations concrete shade chart has colours, pebble and sandstone, which offer simply enough lightness to make a big concrete patio sense more inviting, yet it is not anything too shiny. It nevertheless reads as concrete.
Pests are another concern for gardeners. After all, rabbits, squirrels, slugs and more feast on the tasty plants you are growing. Seaweed mulch is also a great way to deter pests without harming your plants. You may also consider planting mint and marigolds in your garden as pests seem to keep away from these.
